ROYAL FERN

“Why fern?” A question I had already asked myself when I first heard about the skin care brand ROYAL FERN. I wouldn’t have thought that a fairly common plant would work as a miracle for anti-aging. And I imagine that many people feel the same way. To gain more insight, I met Dr. Timm Golueke for a conversation – one of the most renowned dermatologists in Germany and internationally sought-after anti-aging experts. And also the founder of ROYAL FERN.

How does a dermatologist get the idea to launch their own skin care series on the market? The answer seems to be quite simple: The inspiration came from impulses of his patients and question why he does not make his own products. The many years of clinical experience from his practice, a contact point for patients from all over the world, shows him every day where the needs lie: it is the desire for care that tones and firms, i.e. inhibits the breakdown of collagen and elastin and stimulates new formation. „As a dermatologist, you naturally have an expert knowledge of the skin, but you can’t just make skin products“ says Dr. Golueke. He decided to bring the German professor and biochemist Dr. Leonhard Zastrow on board to work on the line.

The first step involved the search for an ingredient. Not just any ingredient. Rather a signature ingredient that Golueke believes in 100%. A study by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York brought them to the fern. There, the fern is used as a supplement for melanoma patients because the fern protects the cell DNA from UV radiation.

This was the first step of Dr. Golueke and Dr. Zastrow to the fern topic. Through further research they came across information that the fern has been used as a medicinal plant in other cultures for a very long time. In Russia, for example, it is used against inflammation, in Korea monks like to use fern tea because it is considered to be detoxifying. And especially the anti-inflammatory effect of the fern is interesting for the skin care line – after all, from a medical point of view, skin aging is a chronic inflammation.

I WOULDN’T HAVE THOUGHT THAT A FAIRLY COMMON PLANT WOULD WORK AS A MIRACLE FOR ANTI-AGING.

From this knowledge the Royal Fern Complex was created in which the fern is combined with other ingredients. This contains: Mineral oxide, which protects the skin from UV radiation by reflection, wild rose oil, which has an antioxidant effect, oil from the seeds of the African Voacanga tree (an always green tree, just like the fern), which has an anti-inflammatory and calming effect and also sea buckthorn oil, which regenerates, has an anti- inflammatory effect and protects against dehydration. And, of course, the fern.

For more than 400 million years, fern has adapted perfectly to the constantly changing conditions of the earth and has served as a moisture reservoir for the forest. Ferns are evergreen and highly resistant to sunlight. Several international independent scientific studies prove that their roots and leaves contain valuable ingredients that positively influence all signs of intrinsic (genetic) and extrinsic (environmental factors) skin aging.

Of course I am often confronted with patients asking me which skin care products they should take. The idea of an own line came from the patients’ question“Don’t you have any products you have created yourself?”
